Mixed Up is a remix album by British band The Cure originally released in 1990. Includes remixes of some of their hits, reflecting the popularity of remixing of existing songs and dance culture of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Most of the songs are extended mixes. Several had been previously released on 12 singles, but some are completely remade, with Smith recutting vocals due to the original tapes not being available. Description Hide Show The Cures *Mixed Up* is a fascinating dive into the bands sonic landscape, showcasing their ability to reinvent and recontextualize their own music. Released in 1990, this remix album serves as a companion piece to their earlier works, particularly the iconic *Disintegration*, and it offers a fresh perspective on some of their most beloved tracks. The album is a testament to the bands willingness to experiment and push boundaries, a hallmark of their career that has kept fans engaged for decades. Whats striking about *Mixed Up* is how it captures the essence of The Cures sound while simultaneously transforming it. The album features remixes of tracks from their earlier albums, including *The Walk*, *A Night Like This*, and *Lullaby*. Each remix is a reimagining, with the band collaborating with notable producers like Robert Smith himself, who took the helm on many of the tracks, and other remix artists who brought their unique flair to the project. The result is a collection that feels both familiar and new, inviting listeners to experience these songs in a different light. One standout track is the remix of *A Night Like This*, which takes the originals haunting melody and infuses it with a pulsating energy that makes it feel almost danceable. The remix breathes new life into the song, showcasing how The Cure can maintain their signature melancholic vibe while also embracing the more upbeat elements of the early ’90s music scene. Similarly, the remix of *Lullaby* transforms the originals eerie atmosphere into something that feels more expansive and layered, allowing the listener to get lost in its intricate soundscapes. Critics at the time of release praised *Mixed Up* for its innovative approach. Publications like *NME* and *Rolling Stone* highlighted how the album not only served as a celebration of The Cures past but also as a bridge to their future. The remixes were seen as a way to connect with a new audience while still honoring the bands legacy. This duality is what makes *Mixed Up* such an essential listen for both longtime fans and newcomers alike. The album also features the previously unreleased track *Never Enough*, which stands out as a highlight. This song encapsulates the essence of The Cures soundmelancholic yet beautiful, with lyrics that resonate deeply. The production on *Never Enough* is lush, with layers of synths and guitars that create a rich tapestry of sound. Its a reminder of why The Cure has remained a pivotal force in alternative music; their ability to craft songs that are both emotionally resonant and sonically adventurous is unparalleled. *Mixed Up* also holds a special place in the cultural landscape of the early ’90s. It arrived at a time when remix culture was beginning to take off, and The Cures willingness to embrace this trend showcased their adaptability. The album not only reflects the bands evolution but also the changing tides of the music industry, where the lines between genres were becoming increasingly blurred. This willingness to experiment has allowed The Cure to remain relevant, influencing countless artists across various genres. In terms of production, the album is a masterclass in how to remix effectively. The Cures approach to remixing is not just about adding beats or altering tempos; its about reinterpreting the essence of the songs. Each remix feels like a conversation between the original and the new, with Robert Smiths vision guiding the process. The attention to detail in the production is evident, with each track meticulously crafted to enhance the listening experience. Overall, *Mixed Up* is more than just a collection of remixes; its a celebration of The Cures artistry and a testament to their enduring legacy. It invites listeners to revisit familiar songs with fresh ears, reminding us of the power of reinvention in music. For fans of The Cure, this album is a treasure trove of nostalgia and innovation, and for new listeners, its an excellent entry point into the bands rich discography. Whether youre dancing in your living room or lost in thought, *Mixed Up* offers a unique experience that captures the spirit of The Cure in all its complexity.
