It was with 2012’s eponymous debut album that Berlin’s KADAVAR cast a spell on all fans of solid riff-driven yet doom-like 70’s hard rock a la Black Sabbath/Pentagram. Marrying this with the spacy psychedelic approach of early HAWKWIND and mixing in a their own distinct warm vintage charm the trio saw astoundingly high vinyl sales and support shows for bands such as Sleep, Saint Vitus & Electric Wizard. ‘Berlin’ is a homage to the hometown of this extravagant and magical band: “When we all moved to Berlin independently we wanted to do something new. We’re all different and we have different origins but we made it to create something together. I think that the sense of life of Berlin has influenced us a lot. So it’s a perfectly fitting album title,” the gigantic drummer Tiger logicaly states. The long time, which KADAVAR spend on the road and follow their vocation, naturally leaves marks and unavoidably flows into the new material. Singer and guitarist Lupus continues: “You are sitting in the bus and drive around through the landscape for months, you look out of the window and see how life runs over. There’s no place for princesses. Your individual needs don’t matter. The only thing which matters, is the project itself.” Tiger adds: “We’ve played with the same line up since two years. When we started to write the songs, there was a good mood in the band and it was the correct timing to find a musical valve for it.” Then it went like clockwork and you can hear the levity in the songs. Completely free and somehow logical in the KADAVAR context, they chose a cover song as bonus on Berlin. A German one – the in anyway already very psychedelic track ‘Reich der Trume’ of The Velvet Underground singer Nico. “It was clear in anyway that we wanted a German song. Not only because of the album title, we are adults now, so we are allowed to do something like that. This time, our album is more influenced by the 60s, so the track fits perfectly. It has this basic psychedelic mono melody and Nico doesn’t use that many words.” We will be allowed to admire the full glory of Berlin on the extensive European tour in the end of the year.
